Feature Highlights Include an Immersive Installation by Guest Artist Mister Cartoon Celebrating “The Lost Angel,” His Never-Before-Seen Downtown L.A. Superhero, an Interactive Installation by Non-Profit Partner Homeboy Industries, and The Other Art Fair’s “Greener Future” 2019 Global Initiative
SANTA MONICA, Calif., March 26, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Saatchi Art’s The Other Art Fair (“The Fair”), a leading international art fair championing emerging and independent contemporary artists, announces its features and programming for the third edition in Los Angeles. The Other Art Fair L.A. will run from March 28th - 31st, 2019 at Magic Box at The Reef, where 140 artists from around the world will showcase their works. The programming for this edition is inspired by the diverse creativity of the city, featuring Los Angeles’ own Mister Cartoon as Guest Artist and Homeboy Industries as the official non-profit partner. The Other Art Fair will also introduce “Greener Future,” its 2019 global initiative promoting a multifaceted approach to eco-sustainability in the arts.
“For our third L.A. edition, we are proud to bring together artists from 24 countries, including Australia, Greece, Guatemala, Japan, South Korea, Poland and others, while supporting local talent and the good work of mainstays within the community, like Mister Cartoon and Homeboy Industries,” said Ryan Stanier, founder of The Other Art Fair. “We are also very excited to work with friends of The Fair to advance causes dear to our heart. Kate Bryan is curating our Greener Future program and Rebecca Wilson is spearheading Saatchi Art’s #RefuseToBeTheMuse spotlight on women artists.”
As Guest Artist, Los Angeles-based graffiti and tattoo artist Mister Cartoon will present an immersive showcase that offers an exclusive preview of his unreleased graphic novel, “The Lost Angel,” which centers on a superhero figure based in Downtown L.A. The installation will include a screening of the animated trailer and limited edition prints and merchandise inspired by The Lost Angel will be available for purchase onsite. Mister Cartoon’s richly detailed, hand-rendered designs—as seen in his collaborations with Nike, Toyota, Microsoft and others—have won him a global following which includes an impressive roster of celebrity clients. With a mission to support the next generation of Angeleno artists, Mister Cartoon will teach a workshop for middle school students onsite on Friday, March 29th to encourage young aspiring artists.
Homeboy Industries, together with its ArtHeals community art therapy program, will present a curated exhibition of artworks donated by ArtHealsʼ students and other artists including Shepard Fairey, Fabian Debora, Eddie Ruvalcaba, Kate DeCiccio, Jonmarc Edwards, Cara Levine, and Cheri Gaulke. ArtHeals’ work will be available for purchase onsite with all proceeds benefiting the organization’s mission to provide hope, training and support to formerly gang-involved and previously incarcerated men and women, allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of our community. In addition, ArtHeals’ teaching artist Laura Miera will present the interactive installation “Sleeved Out with Radical Kinship” which invites fair attendees to create and respond to art and letters received by Homeboy Founder, Greg Boyle with repurposed items from its Homegirl Cafe (activity funded in part by the California Arts Council, a state agency).
As part of a global effort to reduce environmental footprint, The Other Art Fair L.A. will join its sister fairs in rolling out Greener Future, a new multi-faceted initiative which includes a collaboration with Broadcaster and Global Head of Collections at Soho House & Co. Kate Bryan. This worldwide initiative aims to inspire a much-needed discussion on climate change through eco-progressive and environmentally friendly projects that attendees can participate in at The Fair. Special for Los Angeles, Homeboy Industries’ electronic recycling and non-profit Piece by Piece will join the effort by conducting hands-on workshops that encourage attendees to think green.
As part of its signature lively atmosphere, The Fair will feature a central bar with wine, beer, cocktails and soft beverages on offer, as well as a full café presented by Foodlab, gelato by Gelateria Uli, and coffee by Supremo Espresso Bar.
Below are some of the highlighted features:
GUEST ARTIST MISTER CARTOON: THE LOST ANGEL
Preview “The Lost Angel” and purchase a limited edition print in an immersive experience drawn from Mister Cartoon’s unreleased graphic novel about an unlikely superhero hailing from Downtown Los Angeles. Mister Cartoon is also inviting children (aged 12-14) to attend his workshop “Design Your Life” on Friday, March 29th at 3:30pm. Younger visitors can unleash their artistic flair with “Draw Your Superhero” at the Kids Create stand.
NON-PROFIT PARTNER: HOMEBOY INDUSTRIES
Purchase limited edition prints donated by Shepard Fairey, Fabian Debora, Eddie Ruvalcaba, Cara Levine and art from Homeboy Industries ArtHeals in support of the organization. Create and respond to art and letters received by Homeboy Industries’ Founder, Greg Boyle over the years at “Sleeved Out with Radical Kinship” by ArtHeals’ teaching artist Laura Miera (activity funded in part by the California Arts Council, a state agency). Additionally, attendees are encouraged to bring unwanted cell phones and tablets for electronics recycling and to participate in an engaging art activity.
GREENER FUTURE
Curated by Kate Bryan, Broadcaster & Head of Collections for Soho House & Co. The Fair’s Greener Future global initiative will feature Reuse, Art Upcycle, and a Feedback Wall program. Reuse encourages fair-goers to limit waste by purchasing a reusable drinking cup for $10 featuring exclusive new artwork by artist David Shrigley available only at The Fair. Art Upcycle invites attendees to bring an unloved artwork and, for $120, revive it with new touches by artists David Horvitz, C. Finley, or Blanda. The Feedback Wall creates a space for attendees to share ideas for how we all can build a greener future as part of this interactive display.
