Michael Kirby Joins Demand Media To Lead Mobile Strategy

SANTA MONICA, Calif., May 16, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Demand Media, Inc. (NYSE: DMD), a leading content and social media company, has named Michael Kirby as its new SVP & GM, Mobile. A digital media veteran, Kirby fills a new role at Demand Media, including strategic oversight of the company's existing mobile products and the identification of opportunities for expansion in the mobile category.

"Michael has been at the center of each critical evolutionary shift in community, social and mobile the industry has seen thus far," said Larry Fitzgibbon, Demand Media's EVP, Media and Operations. "Michael's uncanny ability to envision the future of the mobile space makes him the right person to propel our mobile portfolio beyond its current reach."

At Demand Media, Kirby will provide strategic and operational leadership across the company's existing mobile offerings, and will direct its future moves in the mobile arena. Demand Media currently offers a broad range of mobile products, including the popular mobile interface to eHow, LIVESTRONG.COM's diet and fitness tracking apps, the Cracked.com iPad app, the Trails.com GPS-based mobile app, and the yardage and score-tracking app from Golflink.

"Demand Media is uniquely positioned to put useful information in the palm of your hand right when you need it most," said Kirby. "No other company can combine content and context in quite the same way, which makes the possibilities for mobile here incredibly exciting."

Most recently Chief Revenue Officer at GOGII, a leader in mobile community application development, Kirby was responsible for developing multiple revenue streams for textPlus, the iTunes App Store's 36th most popular free app of all time.

Kirby began his new media career as a game producer at Activision, ran e-commerce at ESPN and oversaw strategy and operations at FOX Sports Interactive. One of the original authors of the 2005 business plan that launched Fox Interactive Media, Kirby served as EVP and General Manager of Intermix Media (the parent company of MySpace.com) after its acquisition by News Corp.
